Who will take over Finance Committee?

When Bill Green leaves City Council for the School Reform Commission, it's not certain that Council President Darrell Clarke will call a special election to fill the at-large vacancy.

It is certain, however, that Clarke will have to fill the other vacancy Green's departure will create: Finance Committee chair.

Sources say Councilwoman Marian Tasco and Majority Leader Curtis Jones Jr. are in the running.

Tasco is vice chair of the Finance Committee and said she has asked Clarke for the job.

Jones said, "If called upon, I would serve, but I have enough responsibilities in my current position."

Majority leaders typically chair an important committee. Although Jones chairs the Public Safety Committee, the Finance post is considered more prestigious.

Asked if he'd like a bigger role, Jones said, "In my opinion, big is where ever I sit."

Clarke said he won't decide until after Green officially steps down, which may happen at next week's Council session.

"When that opportunity exists, I will make a decision," Clarke said.
