Underdog candidates advise: Avoid voting party ticket

Green Party candidate for sheriff Cheri Honkala this afternoon hosted a news conference to encourage Philadelphia voters to avoid voting the straight party ticket in tomorrow's general election.  Honkala was joined by Republican mayoral nominee Karen Brown, Republican Traffic Court candidate Lewis Harris Jr. and Meighan Dorr, an independent write-in candidate for mayor.

Honkala, who is running against state Rep. Jewell Williams, a Democrat, and Republican Joshua West, said voters should ask polling place staffers if they don't know how to vote for independent or third-party candidates.

"Gone are the days when we can just pull the lever for the party," said Honkala, who has used her campaign to rail against home foreclosures. "We've got to vote for the person."

Brown, a former Democratic committeewoman recruited to run this year as a Republican, agreed. "If you just vote the party line, you're giving away your vote," said Brown, who faces Mayor Nutter, a Democrat, and independent candidate Wali "Diop" Rahman.
