Soda Tax Supporters Visit Council

A health group visited Council today with details from a poll on Mayor Nutter's propsed soda tax -- which they say shows local support for the levy.

According to a poll of 401 likely voters, commissioned by the Campaign for Healthy Kids, 44 percent of voters support a sugar sweetened beverage tax to help fix the city's budget gap. A soda tax had more support than increases to the taxes on businesses, sales, property or a trash fee.

Council has shown little interest in the proposed 2 cent per ounce soda tax, which would be charged to retailers as part of their city business tax.

Here's a link to a press release on the poll (although it does not contain the detailed findings that include the number above). The Campaign for Healthy Kids does not have a functioning website, but the release says they are an anti-obesity advocacy group.
