Primary Day -- State House races

Ok, despite the low interest, there are some competitive Democratic primary races for the state House of Representatives around the city. And there's even one Republican contest up in the Northeast. Here's what you need to know:

  • Sheriff Jewell Williams' daughter Jewel Williams is seeking his recently vacated state House seat representing part of North Philadelphia. But some critics say her campaign wants voters to think that dad is still on the ballot.
  • State Rep. Babette Josephs, who is frequently challenged for Center City's 182nd District, is facing off with her former campaign treasurer Brian Sims, a lawyer active in gay rights issues. That race has gotten ugly.
  • State Rep. Angel Cruz is facing the same two opponents he had two years ago in his bid for a seventh term representing the 180th District, which covers North Philadelphia, Fairhill, West Kensington, Feltonville, and Harrowgate. He's up against retired Police Officer Jonathan Ramos and social worker Anthony Johnson.
  • State Rep. James Roebuck, who has represented West Philly's 188th District since 1985, faces a tough challenge from Fatimah Muhammad, 27, a well-funded candidate with backing from school voucher supporters.
