Nutter to SRC: Pass budget that assumes state will come through

"It is a sad day in public service that we find children being held on the railroad tracks awaiting some rescue to come from somewhere that has nothing to do with them." - Mayor Nutter

As Harrisburg budget negotiations wind down, Mayor Nutter today urged members of the School Reform Commission to pass a budget tonight that assumes the state will increase support for the financially beleaguered School District of Philadelphia.

"I urge you to pass a budget with a placeholder that anticipates positive action in Harrisburg as they continue to work to finalize their budget and to refrain from passing a budget that would include cuts that are so painful that they raise serious questions about whether it is safe to open schools," Nutter wrote in a letter to the five SRC members, who tonight are scheduled to vote on their budget for next year.
