Nutter smacks down bill to lower parking tax

As expected Mayor Nutter vetoed a bill that would gradually lower the city’s 20 percent parking tax.

As expected Mayor Nutter vetoed a bill that would gradually lower the city's 20 percent parking tax.

The city increased the rate from 15 to 20 percent in 2008. The bill, introduced by Councilman Jim Kenney would slowly reduce the rate to 17 percent starting in fiscal year 2014.

In a letter to City Council Nutter said the proposal would cost the city millions and "this is the wrong time to adopt new tax breaks, particularly for a single industry."

Council needed 12 votes to override Nutter's veto but Kenney said he didn't have enough votes. He said the bill will return in January.

City Council voted to pass the bill three weeks ago 12-5. Council members Bill Green, Maria Quinones-Sanchez, Brian O'Neill, Blondell Reynolds-Brown and Darrell Clarke voted against it.
