Nutter announces three major administration departures

There were many teary eyes in City Hall today as Mayor Nutter announced the departures of three top administration officials.

Dr. Donald Schwarz, the deputy mayor for health and opportunity and health commissioner, will step down to join the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Replacing him as deputy mayor is Susan Kretsge, a 39-year veteran of city government. The new health commissioner is Dr. James Buehler, a professor at the Drexel University School of Public Health.

Also stepping down is Department of Human Services Commissioner Anne Marie Ambrose, who will be replaced by DHS and Law Department official Vanessa Garreett Harley.

Lastly, Suzanne Biemiller, Nutter's first deputy chief of staff, is leaving to become chief of staff at the American Board of Internal Medicine. 

Biemiller, who once served as interim chief of staff, had been leading the administration's ongoing effort to sell the Philadelphia Gas Works. 

Nutter's second term ends January 2016.
