Nutter, Ramsey announce changes to police department

Mayor Nutter and police Commissioner Charles Ramsey announced Friday a total of 36 command changes in the police department that officials say will help the department become more efficient and flexible.

The announcement comes as at least four deputy commissioners who are enrolled in the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) are set to retire soon.

Of the changes Ramsey said five of the city’s six detective divisions will get new inspectors and seven police districts will get new captains. Ramsey also consolidated some units.

Ramsey also announced a new head of the Internal Affairs Department (IAD)–Deputy Denise Turpin, a 31-year veteran who has worked two years as a staff inspector for IAD.
