Mayor Nutter: Fans Should Feel Safe At Phillies Games

Mayor Nutter today said the city "reaffirmed its commitment" to providing an orderly environment at the team's professional sports venues after one man was beaten to death Saturday in a parking lot outside of a Philadelphia Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park.

Mayor Nutter today said the city "reaffirmed its commitment" to providing an orderly environment at the team's professional sports venues after one man was beaten to death Saturday evening in a parking lot outside of a Philadelphia Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park.  Two men have been charged in the death of a 22-year-old fan after a brawl spilled outside a stadium bar into the parking lot.

"This is, as far as I'm concerned, crazy, stupid, ignorant behavior that is in no way shape or form representative of Philadelphians or the people of the region," Nutter said. "It's not a reflection on the Philadelphia Phillies. And unfortunately it's almost impossible to account for every stupid, ignorant or asinine thing that somebody might do."

Still, Nutter said, fans should "feel more than comfortable and excited" that they can enjoy baseball, football, hockey or basketball games here without a fear of violence. "You put 45,000-plus people in one place and unfortunately one or two can make it very bad for everyone else," Nutter added.
