Mayor Nutter Decides Not To Appeal FOP Contract

Mayor Nutter today said the city will not appeal the arbitration award given to the Fraternal Order of Police last month.

The five year contract provides longterm benefit savings to the city, but includes costly raises for officers. Nutter said he did not want to risk the gains the city made in the contract.

"We believe the longterm benefits to the city government outweigh the short term costs," Nutter said today during a meeting of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority, the state agency that oversees the city budget.

The city has not yet reached contracts with the other three municipal unions -- the firefighters and blue and white collar workers.
