Mayor Nutter bets beer and community service with St. Louis mayor

Here's the press release on Mayor Nutter's bet with St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay in advance of the upcoming series between the Phillies and the Cardinals:

Philadelphia, September 30, 2011- Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Mayor Francis G. Slay announced a National League Divisional Series (NLDS) bet serving their communities and betting beer. The Mayors agree that they will both volunteer in their respective cities with Habitat for Humanity to celebrate the NLDS. Additionally, Mayor Nutter will bet a selection of microbrews from the Philadelphia region versus Mayor Slay’s bet of Budweiser, which is regionally headquartered in St. Louis.

“I am looking forward to watching the Phillies beat the Cardinals on their way back to the World Series,” said Mayor Nutter. “Habitat for Humanity is an exceptional organization that has made an incredible impact on the lives of Americans and worldwide. Everyone wins when we participate in World Habitat Day. After the series, I anticipate celebrating with a beer, compliments of Mayor Slay.”

Mayor Slay added, “St. Louis is well known for its beer and its baseball. But our City is also well known for the volunteerism and charitable giving of its citizens. I want to thank Mayor Nutter for his commitment to the great organization of Habitat for Humanity – and I look forward tasting some of Philadelphia’s finest microbrews after the Cardinals clinch the NLDS.”

On Monday, October 3, 2011, Habitat for Humanity will celebrate World Habitat Day. Internationally, Habitat for Humanity will mark the occasion by dedicating its 500,000th home in Maai Mahui, Kenya and will raise the walls on its 500,001st home in Paterson, New Jersey. In Philadelphia, volunteers will frame a house in the courtyard of 1515 Market Street at 11:00am. In St. Louis, Habitat volunteers will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity—St. Louis. Each Mayor will participate in a volunteer event with Habitat for Humanity.

Additionally, St. Louis is the North American headquarters of Anheuser-Busch InBev and home to the historic Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Budweiser, the “King of Beer,” is one of the highest selling international beers and is known worldwide. Philadelphia is known as “America’s Best Beer Drinking City” and is home to highly regarded brewers such as Yards Brewing, The Philadelphia Brewing Company and Manayunk Brewery. The losing mayor will send beer from his local breweries to the winning mayor.
