Green Party VP Candidate Cheri Honkala votes

Philly didn’t get any last minute visits from President Obama or Mitt Romney today, but one third-party candidate was voting right here in town.

Philly didn't get any last minute visits from President Obama or Mitt Romney today, but one third-party candidate was voting right here in town.

Anti-poverty crusader Cheri Honkala, running for vice president on the Green Party ticket, cast her ballot this morning in Lower Kensington, the neighborhood where she has worked for decades as an activist.

"It's very emotional," said Honkala, who voted at the Towey Recreation Center at Howard and Berks streets. "This population [the low-income family] has basically been told that they don't matter, they don't count, they don't really have to understand the issues [and] they don't have to get involved in politics."

Honkala is co-founder of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union and the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign, non-profit organizations advocating for low-income families.  She is running on a ticket with Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, a doctor and environmental activist from Massachusetts.

"Four years ago, I voted for Obama and worked on his campaign," Honkala said, but she said she has changed her mind about his leadership. "We not only have a responsibility to better this country, but we have a global responsibility as well."
