Former City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski died this morning. She was 79.
Krajewski, the brawler, straight-shooter councilwoman represented the 6th District in the Northeast since 1979 before retiring two years ago.
She fought absentee landlords, sponsored "right-to-know" legislation and led the charge in efforts to address prison overpopulation.
"Her fiesty nature and sharp political acumen made her equal parts legendary and approachable as a political leader in the Northeast," said Councilman Bobby Henon, who was elected in 2012 to represent Krajewski's former district. "She was an iconic powerhouse."
Sources say Krajewski died early this morning. She had been suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and was recently on oxygen. She leaves behind three sons.
