Activist Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg has declared victory in his fight to get election returns made available to the public.
Urevick-Ackelsberg, who writes on YoungPhillyPolitics, and Ed Goppelt, of Hallwatch, started a fax campaign last month, asking people to fax letters to the city commissioners -- who control elections -- requesting access to the city's password-protected election returns website. Currently, only city bigwigs and paying members of the media can access the site on election night.
But all that is about to change. Last week Goppelt received a letter from the office of City Solicitor Shelley Smith pledging to set up a public website that will provide near real time election returns. According to the letter, the website will be available for the November general election.
