John Dougherty is a politician with feet planted firmly in two different worlds when it comes to waterfront casinos. As head of the local electricians union, Dougherty represents members who want to get to work building casinos in South Philly and Fishtown. As head of the Pennsport Civic Association, Dougherty represents many residents who fiercely oppose construction of the Foxwoods casino in that South Philly neighborhood.
Dougherty declared three months ago to the Daily News that he "fully supports the development of casinos in the city." But Dougherty declined to comment then when PhillyClout asked if that means he supports building Foxwoods in Pennsport
Now Dougherty is running against state Sen. Vince Fumo in the April Democratic primary election. City Councilman Frank DiCicco, a longtime Fumo ally, said during a hearing on Foxwoods yesterday that he would like to know the position of the president of Pennsport Civic Association on Foxwoods.
Dougherty, who wasn't at the hearing, still isn't saying. A spokesman alerts us that "John is not willing to comment on Foxwoods at this time."
