Clarke, Council stand with labor leaders after mayor's address

Immediately following delivery of the mayor’s budget address, City Council president Darrell Clarke convened a press conference to address some of proposals outlined in the budget.

Clarke and 11 members of City Council stood with District Council 33 President Pete Matthews and Keith Holmes, president of the Philadelphia Gas Works union, to demand a “fair” contract and oppose the sale of PGW.

“I do not believe in the privatization of municipal workforce,” said Clarke.

“Today we stand here and state our unequivocal support for labor in the City of Philadelphia.”

Neither Matthews or Holmes or any union members made any outbursts during the mayor’s budget address. Matthews said he made the decision not to interrupt the mayor out of his respect for city council.
