Another Property Tax Proposal Expected In Council Tomorrow

It look like City Council will tomorrow continue to debate how to fill the city's budget gap -- and how a property tax hike should figure into that plan.

Councilman Bill Green tomorrow plans to introduce legislation tomorrow that would raise the city's property tax rate by 5 percent for two years -- with the caveat that the rate would be lowered if the city brings in more tax revenues than expected.

The five percent proposal is far lower than the current bill before Council, for a 9 percent increase in the rate -- and would not raise nearly as much revenue to fill the budget gap, projected to be at as much as $150 million. But Green has advocated for more cuts to make up the difference.
