Voter Turnout "A Joke," GOP Committeewoman Laments
Catherine Lucey
With voter turnout dismally low, some committee people questioned the effort to extend hours at the polls today.
"You know what's worse than working 13 hours with nobody showing up? Working 14 hours with nobody showing up," said Kathleen Widman, a Republican committee person in the 55th Ward's 29th division.
Widman said today's turnout was among the worst she'd seen since becoming a committee person in 1977. As of about 3 p.m., the polling place had 57 voters. "It's a joke," Widman added.

Aw, c'mon, you get plenty of coffee and doughnuts. Jame
What if we voted on the internet AND we could trust the results OR vote on a telephone like we can pay bills? Nah, politicians don't want us voting, at least not the ones in office. Then, they couldn't control the process and all those jobs and all that money. My dad always said, "Nobody Goes Back" to describe how he voted, especially if the economy was bad or corruption was high (a daily occurrence now). I voted today. I hopped in the car headed to work and then remembered that it was Election Day. I did a legal U-turn and voted at my polling place (ironically, my place of worship). I was voter number twenty one. They spelled my name wrong, God love them. I understand that people find it a hardship to vote. Let's make it super easy to vote OR give a free car-wash with every vote! Make it so you can vote at your desk or on your cell phone or your home phone or your pay phone. Peace, Out, Yo! BigDipper
perhaps if the nanny-state government-dependent beatniks cared more about the real world and less about their obamessiah, they would have put down the pipe and remembered there was an election today! davey
how about a vote to fire SEPTA workers? dreinterests
I voted, it was easy. Low turnout is indeed probably just a sign that more people like to complain than take action. pencilchair
ACORN wasn't able to rally the troops? mikeyg
I like the "voted with feet" comment, as that is how I feel. The democratic politics have killed this city a long time ago and it's only getting worse. Patrizia007
I voted at 5pm and was number 89. People just don't give a damn. Tired of the BS

It's Philly and it's quickly becoming Detroit because people vote Democrat whether they know anything about the candidates or not because that's what their union tells them to do or what their fellow brothers and sisters tell them to do and all you get is a corrupt city with high taxes to pay for the quarter of the population on welfare. That's why I moved just outside the city so I'm close enough to the stadiums and some very good restaurants but I don't get whacked by outrageous taxes nor by street thugs looking for cash. There should never be voting on odd number years. Voting should only be on even number years. tokar
If the GOP even TRIED to act like they are a real political party in Philadelphia, MAYBE people would vote...who needs to take even 5 minutes out of their day for foregone conclusions?? Did they spend $3 and 10 minutes promoting the Controller or DA candidates? QUICK-- without looking, what WERE their names??? They pull the judge candidates, some of whom seemed fairly interesting...why should voters care? All the Philly Republicans care about is preserving their little pockets of patronage. mobust
Why don't we make this a national holiday and go back to working on MLK Jr. Day? I think Dr. King would be much happier to see a day devoted to people being freely able to exercise their constitutional right than to to use his great legacy as an excuse to sleep in on a Monday in January. And please don't tell me about service to communtity. There are still more people voting than do actual community service on MLK Jr. Day. Voting would be a much better show of community support and being instruments of change than practically anything else. KSholly
