Toomey Has Big Money Lead On Sestak In Senate Race

POSTED: Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 4:30 PM

The Federal Election Commission July quarterly reports, for the fund-raising period from April 1 to June 30, are not due until Thursday but former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, is already declaring victory in the money race over U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, the Democratic nominee.

Toomey this afternoon said he raised $3.1 million in the last quarter and has $4.65 million in the bank as of July 1.  A Sestak spokesman told the Associated Press today that he raised $2 million in the quarter and has $2 million in the bank.  Toomey started spending some of that money last Wednesday, running a new round of television campaign commercials.  Sestak yesterday would not say when he was going to follow suit.

The Quinnipiac University Poll is expected to release a new poll of registered Pennsylvanian voters tomorrow morning, showing how Toomey and Sestak are doing in the run-up to the Nov. 2 general election.  The last poll that tested the two candidates in a match-up, conducted by Quinnipiac five days before Sestak defeated U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in the May 18 Democratic primary election, showed Sestak and Toomey in a virtual tie.

Where are the Republicans on these boards who like to suggest Democrats always raise more money from big business and special interest groups, and therefore "buy" elections for minorities and other voting groups they think aren't real Americans?

i think next quarter will be a better indicator, Sestak had to raise and spend for the primary. He also had to campaign and win the primary for the first half of the quarter. Toomey only had to raise money.

And who will the Inquirer endorse? Wait for it… Wait for it… That is right Sestak! They didn’t endorse him against Specter, but never mind that, in six quick months Sestak will morph into one of the greatest Senators of all time.

Watch the mass influx of $'s for Sestak from the trial lawyers. They held back in the primary because Specter's son is one of them. Now the gates will open with the Obama/Biden trial lawyer money looking for somewhere to go. Sestak will be their next favorite in the Northeast. Of course those other mega money groups like the NEA and the SEIU will also be pouring it in as well. They hated Specter's position on secret ballot in union elections. Tyhey will love Admiral Bonaparte.

When will Sestak release his service record? Even the Philly Inquirer asked for it. Joe, what are you hiding. Perhaps you can get your Pal Bill Clinton to run with you.

Whoa, sw714, I don't think you know enough about Pat to lump him in the liar category. I think there is enough shading of the truth on both sides, which means it isn't unique to one party or candidate. If Pat were truly a liar, he would have remained a congressman after pledging to only serve a limited term. To me, the fact that he honored his pledge speaks volumes about the man he is and the senator I hope he will become. That said, I do believe it is far too early to run campaign ads on TV. By being on TV so early and often, he runs the risk of alienating the very people who want to see him succeed.

What a surprise: A right wing neo con like Toomey is raising more money. What a shocker. I have more faith in PA than to vote Toomey to the Senate. PA has not gone to the lunatic fringe just yet.

@RightWingHyprocrite, the Dems had Bill "I didn't inhale" Clinton. Both parties have their people who have done some stupid stuff. I wouldn't put either Toomey or Sestak into that category. This race should be competitive. So far, neither side has started throwing mud, and I like that.

I hope Toomey succeeds in becoming better known. Santorum was defeated by Casey precisely because he was so well known, and the same is true with Arlen Specter's recent primary defeat.
