A car passes over the South Street bridge in Philadelphia on March 9, 2008. The bridge will be closed for construction. Expect traffic delays in the area.
David Maialetti / Philadelphia Daily News
Mayor Nutter just announced plans to replace the 85-year-old South Street bridge, which connects Center City and Grays Ferry to University City. Nutter said a $67 million contract has been awarded to the Driscoll Construction Company. This city is paying 5 percent of the cost while the state and federal governments are paying the rest.
The bridge will be closed in early December for the project to start. Traffic will be detoured to the bridges over the Schuylkill River at Walnut Street and Chestnut Street. The project is expected to take up to 24 months. Nutter said the bridge design has been re-worked to make it more pedestrian friendly.
UPDATE: The City's Streets Department has placed information on the project online here.
I seen some designs. It looks very nice and updated. Glad to see some much needed changes. Once Circa 2 gets built to the west and Bridgeman View and Waterfront square are complete the city will really look like its expanding. In the last 4 years its been very positive growth. St. James Building, Sympathy House, Comcast Ceneter, Water Front sqaure, Ritz Carlton, the two at Rittenhouse, Circa Center. Glad to see the eveolution of Philly.
haha... the sympathy house...
