Shake-up at City Commission means ousted chairwoman must move offices

The dust has barely settled on the dramatic ousting Wednesday of Stephanie Singer as chairwoman of the three-member City Commission, but new co-chairs Al Schmidt and Anthony Clark are already making changes.

Clark will be moving into the commissioners' largest City Hall office, which is currently occupied by Singer, and may hire some more staff, Schmidt said. Schmidt said he will stay put in his current office and does not plan any more hires.

Another key issue is how to handle salaries at the elected panel that oversees city elections. City law states that the chair of the commisisoners gets a higher salary than the other two commissioners, but it does not say how to handle a shared leadership structure.

Schmidt -- who already gives back ten percent of his pay -- said he will not be seeking a higher salary. But he could not comment on what Clark will do and Clark did not return a call for comment.

Meanwhile, Singer, who did not come to work Thursday, said she would go along with whatever changes her colleagues wanted to make.

"I assume they will let me know," she said.
