Philadelphia's sales tax hike will go into effect on Oct. 8, according to Janel Miller, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue

The sales tax will go from 7 cents to 8 cents on the dollar. Two cents will come to the city and the rest to the state. The increase -- which was approved last week by the state legislature to help the city balance the budget -- is set to last five years and is expected to bring $580 million during the time.

I work in New Jersey, which means I will now also shop in New Jersey. Though $0.01 doesn't seem like much, it's the principle. Sorry Nutter...

There is no such thing as a temp tax. The tax on booze was to help pay for the Johnstown floods. Last time I checked that happen decades ago, and we are still paying the tax. Just like a good tax and spend democrat, Mr Nutter has gotten a new tax that is here to stay. I am sure the 'burbs will see a moderate increase. Worst pay tax is taking more money for those who don;t have it. It will be interesting to watch as business blame the higher charges on new tax, while trying to explain a 10 % increase

What a disgrace. Once again, the politicians refuse to cut spending waste like everyone else has to. Just raise taxes, punish businesses more for being in Philadelphia...and the downward spiral continues.

Nice move Mayor, just what a struggling economy in Philly needs hire taxes. Again someone must bail you out when you can’t properly manage your money, and City Council has the nerve to take off in the summer. This city is a joke.

I love how everyone pretends they have the answer yet they couldn't win the simplest of elections...And then others think that a sales tax increase will somehow create such a downturn in how much people are willing to buy, that it will offset any gain. Well if the economy is so bad, how are people going to spend twice as much to drive elsewhere (gassssss), so they don't have to pay the extra 1%? No one likes paying taxes, and everyone always complains when they go up...but until you have a better solution, or until someone who matters considers you a valid thinker, just baa baa baa
