Rick Santorum Suspended From Fox News

POSTED: Wednesday, March 2, 2011, 12:46 PM

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, along with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, were suspended today from their jobs as Fox News contributors because it appears both are ramping up campaigns for president. [Hat-tip here to Mediaite.com].

Fox News anchor Brett Baier said the suspension is effective for 60 days and the contracts for Santorum and Gingrich will be terminated on May 1 unless they tell Fox News that they are not running for president.  Baier said the move has been "contemplated from the start, from the very beginning" by Fox News. He added that other announcements may be made in the future, an apparent reference to other Fox News contributors such as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who are also pondering campaigns for president.

It's been nearly a year since we trailed Santorum across Iowa in the early days of his stumping for a possible presidential run.  That followed a letter Santorum sent to political contributors in January, 2010, to alert them that he was "actively considering" a run for president.

Fox News anchor Jenna Lee added that this "is not a suspension like from grade school for getting in trouble. Let's make that clear out there."

UPDATE, 2:30 pm:  Santorum's political action committee, America's Foundation, just released this statement from the former senator about the Fox News suspension:

“Over the past few years, I have appreciated the opportunity to work with many great professionals at Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network to discuss the critical issues facing our country. I share in their commitment to ensure news organizations provide balanced coverage of the issues of the day. I intend to use the months ahead to continue my evaluation of a potential presidential run, and I will make an announcement on my final decision sometime in the coming months.”

This makes me want to learn more about Rick Santorum. I'll go do a Google search on his name. . .

FOX should do the same right now for Palin and Huckabee.

Bring him on. He's a sure loser. Hopefully at the head of the ticket, Santorum will bring down Republican candidates for lower offices across the land. Hey Rick--you like theocracies, why don't you move to Iran? Shiite attitudes toward women are sort of like yours. You could learn Farsi with a few years of immersion.

I'm curious if MSNBC suspended democratic candidates back in 2007. And yeah, they should suspend Huck and Palin as well.

If any of those two achieve the impossible and gets nominated by te GOP, I will become convinced that the GOP wants to throw away the elections. So, Fox let them go. The Comedy Channel should pick them up.

Obama would beat Santorum in a landslide. This is a sick individual (likely with same-sex attractions) due to his crusade on "social issues." What a weirdo...then again, this country is losing its mind (see the rise of the tea party and the complete assault on anyone that is open-minded, willing to compromise, and not from "real america." I am scared that someone like Santorum might actually get to the White House soon.

RickVS - MSNBC (who only has 2 outright left wingers on their channel) has never had any Presidential Candidates on their payroll. Fox on the other hand is right-wing welfare for any and all GOP hacks and candidates.

So let me ask a nagging question here: can Rick Santorum just live off the donations from wealthy wingnut contributors as long as his life remains an endless campaign? I mean, it seems like this guy's job consists of being a perpetual candidate. Same with Huckabee and Romney.
