Rendell: GOP "Being Taken Over By Wackos"
Chris Brennan
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine came to the University of Pennsylvania this afternoon hoping to fire up the generation of new voters who elected President Obama two years ago, ahead of the Nov. 2 mid-term elections. But Gov. Rendell nearly stole the show while introducing Kaine to a room of about 150 students and organized labor members when he claimed the Republican Party is being taken over by "wackos."
As proof, Rendell cited a Republican push to hold hearings on the section of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that grants citizenship to people born in this country, continuing doubts among the party's voters that Obama was born in this country and claims from GOP officials that laid-off workers would rather stay on unemployment than take new jobs.
“It’s the party that’s slowly but surely being taken over by wackos," Rendell said, drawing laughter and cheers from the crowd. "“We’re going to turn the reins of Congress over to the people who are more and more dominated by the wacko wing? Of course not. So we have a lot to sell. We haven’t done a good job selling it."
Rendell and Kaine argued that federal stimulus spending criticized by the GOP to attack Democratic candidates has created and saved jobs in Pennsylvania and the rest of the country. Rendell accused Republicans of wanting the economy to continue faltering. "They want to use it as an election issue all the way up to 2012," Rendell said. "That’s destructive. It’s unfair. And frankly, it’s outrageous."
... and what are the democrats turning into, the party of whiners? junethe4th
better a whiner than a flat-earth lunatic who hates America (and of course the tea party does hate america, that's why they want to rewrite the constitution and why they're always complaining about how awful america is and how they need to "restore" the country). brendancalling
Wow, all the things Rendell noted as being "wacko" are exactly the problems I have with the Dems inaction except the Obama being born in the US part. If you want to look at Wacko, take a look at Nancy Pelosi, Charlie Rangle, Maxine Waters and Barney Frank..and throw in AlGore for good measure, oh, and how about Harry Reed ..the list goes on. I actually like Rendell, but when he talks on a national scale, he talks "stupidly". jphil
rewrite the constitution? Um...that's what the amendment process is for. You do realize we only had 10 amendments back when the constitution was written. palmyra21
brendan, did you go off your meds? Explain how the tea party hates America? What do they want to change in the Constitution? What was said that leaves you to say the tea party complains about how awful America is? Before you start spouting off be sure you know what you are talking about. junethe4th
How's your former city doing being run by the party of non-wackos, Eddie? Echo
"So we have a lot to sell." Ed, are you kidding? We are paying attention here. President Urkel spent time "selling" Unhealthcare that few people wanted and jobs were lost. This unholy alliance of government unions and Democrat politics is heading for a disaster. Oh, and thanks for DROP. I vote we dissolve the current government of Philadelphia and start over, without government unions, DROP, etc. tomj139
Comment removed.- Wacko solutions from both parties. As the American "vision" has been replaced with greed and power. Time to tip the scale backwards.

Political discussions are becoming more and more banal and irrelevant. It's the de-braining of America. SirEdward
"So we have a lot to sell. We haven’t done a good job selling it." - Sorry Eddie. To sell something you need a buyer and we're not buying what you're selling. "We haven’t done a good job selling it." - Oh, my sides. PhillyTru- The debraining of America began when republicans took over Terry Schiavo's private medical tragedy and turned her into a fundamentalist bible thumping prayer vigil in the US Senate. Apparently the metaphysical is all the republicans can find the time to vote on, because they have been on strike since a Black man took over power in the White House. Using the organized labor tactic of the general strike, with one difference, the republicans who refuse to do work in Washington are still cashing paychecks that come from my tax dollars. Thanks for nothing but filibustering BS. Why did you run for office in the first place? If you go to Washington DC to work, get something done other than say NO over and over again.
- All true Gov, all true - of course the paid hacks and nut jobs are sure to blog on here otherwise.
the real wackos are those who support merrily continuing down the path of fiscal insolvency aka dems jstash
LOL---All the medicated momma's boys and girls posting in support of Ed Spendell...Have you slept with Marge lately?....Cause I am fairly certain a certain some one hasn't!!!!!....HaHaHaHa will_wonders_never_cease
The de-braining of America started when politics got so geographically and technically broad and complex that nobody, including the politicians themselves, understood the real issues anymore. Since we were still holding elections, however, the politicians had to manufacture some simple, easily digested issues that were sure to inflame and incense the voting public, turning them against each other in highly polarized groups who wanted nothing other than for their side to be right. I digress, though. SirEdward
I don't know why this is even news. You can come on the comment boards and see how that party is being taken over by wackos. HandNik

Over and over and over I read disgustingly childish (nah nah nahnah)attempts at humor by the right. Do any of you anywhere have even one single idea for making the country happy? Merely voting for Rep's won't do anything. What are the secret programs for improvement? stoneman
Notice how the Stoneman enumerated his party's ideas to get the country back on track....Tax, tax, tax some more, then tax, tax, tax a little more...Not one reasonable, thoughtful idea for creating jobs in this country with the government's involvement---you are closed minded Stoneman---the current tax load is unsustainable---Do you understand that?---Can you comprehend that?---Look a Detroit and LA and Harrisburgh---Open your feeble mind and THINK!!!!!---That is why you get insutled---Closed minded elite wannabe dope will_wonders_never_cease

Not are they attracting a bunch of mindlees whackos, they struggle with being honest. Republicans/Tea Party sure attracted some winners. I keep hearing how the Tea Party is for lower taxes and smaller goverment. None of the Tea Party candidates are running on that. And why is the fundamentalist Christian crowd becoming such a major player in the Tea Party? That crowd was talks about less taxes or smaller government. Rendell is Pay-to-Play and nepotism? Take a look at the Republican controlled Parking Authority in Philly. It's the worst of the worst. MikeP
Hahahaha...and he stands as the Governor of Pennsylvania with its largest city being run by what exactly??? Thanks Eddie. Moron. ant8817- Darn Right Ed... and we are proud to not be associated with the likes of Washington D.C or Harrisburg. Call us what you like, but don't let the door hit you guys on the backside.
The GOP has been taken over by wackos since the 70's. First there were the supply siders, then the religious right, newt's gang, the neo cons and now the tea party. The GOP's image has been changed over and over again to try and win over the american people yet each of these factions cancel out any of their good with their bad. flavious27

I find it offensive. I find that many Liberals are way more crazy. To tar any group with such an offensive label is irresponsible. BTW way to pick Greene to run the PHA - not sure you have the right to call anyone else names. msvndy

You statists Democrats don't take things to vote you just change it with your activists judges. You and OBama thumb your nose at the Constitution that is why you call it a living and breathing documen meaning you can interpret it anyway you want. MoRacker

Comment removed.- I think Brendan thinks the Tea Party wants to look at the 14th amendment of the constitution. They want it clarified since the leftists "interpreted" wrongly again that Mexicans sneaking across the border to drop their babies are citizens. If you read the amendment you will know that that is not the intention. MoRacker

- @MikeP - are you serious? The Tea Party backed candidates aren't running on lower taxes and less government? Really? You are in another world buddy. Then you through thet horrible Christians in the mix. I'd rather have them on my side then siding up with the Muslims like you statists do. Just remember that the Mexican people are very religious Christians. Don't offend them with your Christian hate. MoRacker
- Sure we have 9.6% unemployment and record deficits but the other side is a " bunch of Wackos"??????? Wow, Good luck winning with that message. When the leader of the House says " we have to pass the bill to see what is in it" I think perhaps some introspection is in order. Instead we get name calling and insults.
Fernando touche. The Repubs have convinced poor people, meaning folks who earn under $250,000 that they don't like blacks, gays, latinas and muslims. While we are bust fighting amongst ourselves, they are looking out for their folks...people earning over $250,000. People need to wake up and see things for what they are.......we are much more alike than we are different........the Repubs could give a damn about any of us who don't make real money.........yet....idiots think they speak to them........they wouldn't let any of you clean their toilets........we live in a rich vs, poor society, religion and color has nothing to do with it.......and if you are not one of them (earning more than 250,000) wake up call...you are one of us (earning under 250,000), deal with it....... philligrl- Flavious27 what are you doing on this board. Intelligent, informed opinions are not welcome here! Thanks for making the only honest comment on the entire post. MtnClmr
When you don't have success, offerings of substance, or even good ideas, resort to name calling. Classy and highly productive! Question...why are conservative radio and tv shows much more successful than liberal ones? Answer?...because the liberals don't have logic, historical success, or substantive ideas to talk about. What they resort to in virtually all cases is name calling, hate mongering and race-baiting, and idealism (usually Marxist-based) that is inconsistent with this country's core values and history. bartfr
swedes...what has been the Repubilican answer to reducing the unemployment rate???? what is the plan to turn things around.......and if one of you idiots stand up for tax cuts you won't see a penny of, you need help.....only a damn fool votes against their own pocket. Big business is not going to take those cuts and create jobs, no wait, they will create jobs in China and India...what is wrong with you people? Didn't all of you just watch jobs and businesses being shipped overseas by the millions?? Ummm that is why we have record high unemployment........do you al drink...are you on drugs.....alzheimers....what is it, I refuse to believe most of you saying foolish things are really that stupid....... philligrl

If "wacko" is the best descripter Rendell can come up with the Donkey Party is in real trouble. As a former head of the DNC he should be able to make a comment with more gravatis. Sadly Ed is washed up. By by Eddie..... vc bear

Ed's idea of norm? Communist hoagie shop!!! No meat just redistribute the baloney! fbpdplt
Usually Rendell is more restrained. The fact that he has resorted to name-calling speaks of desperation. Clearly Rendell doesn't think his Dems can survive the November elections unless he stoops to insulting the opposition. Unfortunately, for him, name-calling won't work. Any rationale person can see how the U.S. stock market and economy began to collapse in the second half of 2008, as Obama made his socialist views known and came closer to securing the Presidency. Those in the know (well-heeled investors and institutions), knowing what they did about Obama, rolled back their investments before Obama even set foot into office. Certainly, Obama's destructive actions to date have only served to confirm their instincts and to continue to hold the economy hostage. Seaner
The Constitution was written with zero amendments, not 10, palmyra21. The fact that the Dems are lumping the radical elements in with the majority of Republicans shows how afraid they are of losing in November. Dems must thank god every day for George W. Bush, because they haven't had an idea most Americans like since 1996. dragoon6
This is the man who has 3 appointees on the SRC and co-wrote an apology piece for Ackerman instead of seeking justice after 27 Asian kids had their civil rights violated in one day of mayhem at a Philadelphia School. You would have to believe that the opposition was run by wackos to stomach voting for the party that has a dead lock on power in Philadelphia and is turning it into Detroit without Automobiles. Rendell's popularity is sinking now, I can't imagine what's going to happen the muni bond market collapses and kicking fiscal irresponsibility down the road is no longer an option. CatoTheElder- Ed, you are a big Eagles fan, but that doesn't redeem you. You are a political hack. Is that how you want to live the rest of your life?
I liked ed..lived 10 minutes from his house on Warden Drive..am a registered Dem..but he's way off base here. Then again, He was talking to "students" and "organized Labor", about as far left a group as you could conjure up. Sorry Ed, I have a functioning brain, and you are too far left. John L
Gov.Rendell people are staying on unemployment as long as they can rather than going back to work, because your party of hope and change has done nothing to rejuvinate the economy!I know this because I am guilty of staying on unemployment as long as I could, the biggest reason being there are no jobs that pay more than unemployment does!I have lost hope, and the only change I see is higher unemployment than before Obama was elected. paulito13

Ed Rendell is a joke. This guy is so corrupt and says the most inappropriate things. He is as stupid as the other Philly native...Chris Matthews. I have two words for DC politics...term limits! DebP

"WACKOS"! Ed's PENN wit is only surpassed by his Eagles commentary. The world is not WIP, you big (hmmm?) DUMMY! KDH
Speaking of wackos, Fast Eddie, shouldn't your undivided attention be on trying to stave off bankruptcy for the city of Harrisburg? You remember Harrisburg... the capital of PA.? You're Governor? It's been in all the papers! Catch22
Vinny_Fumo... they wouldn't cash your government assistance check again this week? Can always tell. You get so P.M.S.y! Catch22
I liked Rendell better when he was fat. He must have skipped another meal when he wrote this. Blame it on low blood sugar. rbpeeple
It is wacko for Rendell to give $20 million of tax payer money to a private developer who is building a "playground for the rich". It is listed in HB 2291 Capital Budget on p118. The project is called Valhalla Brandywine. The local legislators don't want it, Wallace Township Supervisors don't want it. Rendell and Greenfield got a Representative from Bucks County to sponsor it. It makes a taxpayer wonder what incentive Rendell and Greenfield used to get him to sponsor a project in a small township in Chester County. Tim.J
Once again the Democrats show they only have one play left in their playbook. When you can't argue the facts, and you have been beaten, harken back to your childhood days and call your opponent names. Na na na na na you are wacko's!!! NoBama- Philligrl let me educate you a bit here. First if the Bush tax cuts was so bad like the dems been telling us for the last 6 yrs why are they talking about extending them then? Second wall street has given more money to the dems than the repubs in the last 10 years. Look at the ultra rich....Bill Gates, Steven Jobs,Warren Buffet they are all Democrats. If you cut taxes and spending you will kick the economy started. If you want the jobs to come back you have to cut the capital gains tax in half we have the second highest capital gains taxes in the world. Pres. Clinton balanced the budget by first cutting the capital gains tax, but liberals never tell people that. If they would have taken the 813 billion they used for the stimulus bill and cut the capital gains and given a pay roll tax holiday for a year our economy would have doubled. skills
Rendell can't focus on the issues as the corrupt and incompetent Democratic leadership has turned the Bush recession into the Obama Depression. Any Tea Bagger is the better alternative to slime like Rendell. NO DEMOCRATS! John-VA
