Longtime Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce executive Joseph Mahoney Jr. died last night. He was 58.

Mahoney, who joined the Chamber in 1990 served as the vice president and oversaw public policy activites. Prior to that he worked with U.S. Congressman R. Lawrence Coughlin (R.-PA).

"Joe cared passionately about our city and region. Whatever the issue Joe would often be the first to lend a hand or give an opinion," Mayor Nutter said in a statement. "He worked hard on behalf of the business community, cared greatly about city policies and always gave of his time to make things better for all of us. We have lost a good man, and we will greatly miss him."

Rob Wonderling, president of the Chamber said, "Joe made a difference in the lives of so many people throughout our community. He loved Philadelphia and will be greatly missed by all who had the honor to know him."

Mahoney suffered a heart attack yesterday. He is survived by his mother Edna, his wife Patricia McElwee Mahoney, his two brothers, six nieces and nephews.
