PLEASE NOTE: This story has been updated

Is Philly ready for another national political clam bake?

U.S. Rep. Bob Brady said today that he expects Philadelphia will be one of the cities competing for the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Brady said he had spoken with Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine and Philly will be asked to submit a proposal to host the event.

“He told me that he was glad to hear that we were interested,” Brady said. “We’re going to try. They’re going to send us an (Request for Proposals). We’re going to put our minds together.”

But Mayor Nutter said that a city bid is not a sure thing yet, noting that a convention is an expensive event.

"We'll take a look at the materials from the DNC. Obviously it would be a lot easier if the DNC would guarantee that it would not cost the city a dime," Nutter said. "We still have a city to run."

Brady said he met with Mayor Nutter and Comcast executive David L. Cohen about a month ago to talk about bidding for the event. He said he expected the city to now put a group together to work on the bid.

“It’s the best city in the world,” Brady said.

Philadelphia hosted the Republican National Convention in 2000.

*This post and headline have been updated to reflect Mayor Nutter's remarks that a bid is not definite.

Philly did a decent job with the RNC convention back in 2000. There's even more hotels and amentities now than back then and the expanded convention center will be ready to go.

Yeah, exactly. Anything that gets people to spend their money here is a good thing.

They've already destroyed this city. They may as well see what their policies have wrought. I have a suggestion, however. Delegates and attendees must stay in North Philadelphia. It will boost the economy (stay local, right?), and they can get an unadulterated look at what decades of Democratic policies have produced. I nominate (by then) former Senator Harry Reid to be in charge making the arrangements.

We'll get it. The Democrats wanted Philly in 2000 but the republicans picked Philly first.

If ONE additional PENNY of city tax dollars are needed to bring these spineless crooks to town, I might actually protest for the first time in my life. Vote Libertarian!

What a great idea! The 2000 RNC was a huge success and it would be nice to repeat that. The city will have a lot in place by 2012 that will make it a natural fit for the DNC. The city also has a special place in the hearts of both Obama and Biden. Imagine Obama delivering his acceptance speech in front of the Art Museum with the Parkway jam packed!
