Nutter on DN Story About State Rep. Run-In With Police
Catherine Lucey
Mayor Nutter this morning said he had not read today’s jaw-dropping Daily News story about two cops handcuffing state Rep. Jewell Williams, but was aware of the incident.
“I have not read the story. I have talked to Rep. Williams,” said Nutter, who said he met with Williams and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey the day after the March 28 episode.
Nutter said Williams gave some advice during the meeting and seemed satisfied with the sit-down. Nutter also insisted that the Williams episode was one of a number of “isolated incidents.”
“The overwhelming majority (of police officers) are doing a great job,” he said. “In state Rep. Jewell Williams situation, I think that was a case of judgment out on the street.”
Nutter said that all reports of police misconduct “get complete review and examination.” Ultimately, he said, decisions about punishment lie with the police commissioner.
- What about governmental misconduct? Who answers to that?
Its funny how we only get to comment on this story on the blog section of the newspaper. Every other story involving an incident in the black community automatically gets a comment section. This site is a breeding ground for racist bigots to vent as well as the Philadelphia Police Department. Not every officer is like this and respect and commend policer officers for protecting us but this type of behavior is contradictory to what they are supposed to be doing. Everyone in the black community is not a criminal, and the majority of them are law abiding citizens, contrary to popular belief. Police need to stop treating everyone as though they are criminals. This man is a state legislator and a former officer. To say he isn't pro police is an insult. The citizens of this city need to know that if an officer is using excessive force on a false arrest, then we have the right to resist and protect ourselves. As a tax paying citizen I am outraged to see my tax money going to waste in this manner. Talk about wasteful spending, what can be more wasteful than paying someone to violate our rights? jayman
Philadelphia policemen including Chief Ramsey have to be vigilent that they don't become as lawless as the criminals that prey upon the citizens of this city. Ajax10

[Thank you jayman 11:54 AM, 04/06/2009 Its funny how we only get to comment on this story on the blog section of the newspaper] My sentiments exactly. Where all the Clean up people on this posting? I have often commented on how selective the news paper is in regards to which stories are available for comments. They are just as much responsible for the tone that permeates the 'Law and Order Institute' How in the world can you subscribe to these events as ISOLATED? It's a culture that goes to the type of people they hire. When does the psychological evaluations come to play, after they are hired for such a special job and come under investigation? As I say, the police controls the state, and regardless of what color sits in the top chair it will remain the same. Then you wonder why people are taking a proactive target on Cops. Find your answer in the next event, because it will surely come. The Us against Them war they deploy, with 'You don't support us so this is how I feel' mentality is beyond ignorance. The Chief is afraid of the FOP and the Mayor is afraid of both of them. They just may do a Dinkle on Nutter if he dares to speak. Having a previous record justifies treatment of abuse. Ohhh he was a Bad Guy so it doesn't matter how ugly it gets. Goons in uniform serving the White Collar Mafia known as a Democratic Government...vote for what? The system will never change. Let it crumble to anarchy so everyone taste the cake!! I hope Williams realized that he is just another "ONE'. But it seems he found resolved by maybe appropriating more money for "TRAINING". How white of him! aden

Angry racist so called police officers!!! golden
It's a good thing that the man was Williams or we'd likely never know about this incident. Ramsey had no business putting these two back on the streets. They should be in jail. The recent deaths of officers in the line of duty remind us of how dangerous a cop's job is. And then these two guys remind us of how dangerous a bad cop's job can be to others. How many more are like them, and how will we ever know? R5er
R5er, you are so correct. "Regular" people are harrassed on a daily basis and their stories are never told (or listened to). Until people start looking at the reality of police brutality, we are going to see more and more of a disconnect between police and communities. ralph
"Isolated incidents" indeed. Let's be honest for once. It's all isolated incidents and fun and games until it happens to you or a state rep.. Most folks don't get a sit down with the Mayor and commish over these incidents. I can't tell you the last time a commish apologized to an average citizen for being beaten, shot, abused, robbed or otherwise criminally violated by one of the commish's people. Not everything gets reported. Not everything gets videotaped, photographed or recorded. Not every incident involves a state rep.. The message to most is that they and what is done to them doesn't matter. If you are a state rep. and former LEO then the system gives you the courtesy of acknowledging your dignity and offering an apology. The rest of folks get treated very differently. The mayor and commish should take the time to talk to everyday folks about their similar experiences. It may shed light on the full nature and extent of these unfortunate "isolated incidents" of which the Mayor spoke. Tkat
jayman has a great point if this was about someone robbing killing or stealing they would be left out to dry but since they are cops doing wrong they want to keep a lid on it. this site is ______ "u fill the blank, its a sad day when cops treat people this way and its viewed as just being careful, this is wrong. they should be FIRED, no administrative leave or follishness, shown the door. allfillyphan
It can be read elsewhere on the site that even the FOP's McNesby made an apology to the state rep.. Why is it this "isolated incident" calls for apologies from Nutter, Ramsey, and no less than McNesby? Never heard of this happening before. Could it be that none of the folks in those other "isolated incidents" are worth the bother? Sure seems to be the case. I doubt the state rep. really did anything that would begin to justify what happened to him. I know the state rep. is not the first or only person in that respect either. Doesn't sound like Cornish did anything special. Did the Mayor, Commish and FOP Prez have a sit down with or apologize to Cornish? Just how many times would something like this have to happen before it is beyond "isolated incidents" I wonder. Does it only count among the "isolated incidents" when it gets on camera or it happens to a state rep.? Tkat- We need more cops like these two. Maybe then all the scumbags will stop killing cops. And who in their right mind holds 900 dollars in cash on them? I don't care who or what color/nationality you are that seems like a red flag. Everyone is forgetting what has been going on in Philadelphia, our cops are being MURDERED left & right these Men & Women need to be tough. Maybe this city is a bit to quick to yell "its cause I'm Black" My response to that is grow up. Everyone crys the cops never do enough & now they are being to hard People of Philadelphia make up your mind PLEASE!!! Let the MEN & WOMEN do their job maybe if you kept your mouths shut & out of other peoples business there wouldn't be this problem. My comment probally will not be posted because I am siding with the cops and I'm white. But it feels ood to say how I really feel. hopeful1
