Nutter Takes Aim At NRA And Gun Shops

Mayor Nutter used a press conference at Police headquarters this morning to take aim at the National Rifle Association and two local gun shops for suing the city in an attempt to block enforcement of five new local gun control laws.  Nutter said the NRA was "virtually criminal in their actions" for blocking efforts at local gun control.  He also suggested that gun sales data shows the two gun shops -- Colosimo's Inc. and The Firing Line Inc. -- have made multiple sales of guns to individuals in five-day spans.  One of the new city laws would limit handgun sales to one a month. "I think you have to use common sense and your own moral decency to say: Why would I continue selling this person weapons?" Nutter asked about the multiple sales. "It's clear that they probably are not using it for their own protection. How many guns do you need?"

Nutter stopped short of accusing the shops of purposely helping customers make "straw purchases," where guns are sold legally to those who can possess them and then re-sold on the streets to people who can't legally possess them.  But still Nutter was hitting hard at the gun shops. "They stepped up big and bad, wanting to file a lawsuit," Nutter said. "If you file a lawsuit, be prepared to take some coming back at you. The facts are the facts. I don't need to accuse them of anything. The data lays out what they're about and what they do. They need to be held accountable."

Common Pleas Court Judge Jane Cutler Greenspan is about to reconvene a hearing in City Hall on the NRA's request for a permanent injunction to keep the five gun control laws from being enforced.  From the way Greenspan spoke during a hearing yesterday, it seems likely that the NRA is going to get it's way.  But that may be fine with the city, which is hoping to take the case to a higher court on appeal. City Solicitor Shelley Smith this morning seemed almost eager: "Certainly if she intends to grant the permanent injunction, we would prefer that she did it sooner rather than later."  The city will have 30 days to appeal but Smith said she'd be ready to go in a week to 10 days.

Yawn - Nutter is complaining that the gun shops sold legal guns according to state and federal law. Big deal. Every handgun sold is registered with the PA state police, along with info on the owner. Multiple handgun purchases are registered with ATF. What more will Philly's laws do? NADA! The same newspapers reported last week on a Philly-area straw purchase ring being busted with presently existing law. Funny how Nutter isn't talking about that.

Nutter should change name to "NUTCASE", he is the criminal here, trying to create illegal laws because he doesn't have the support in the state legislature, I guess the moron just believes that he is above the law as the rest of the liberal gun-control crowd feel, always funny how the minority believes everyone should be in lockstep with their views and when you're not they believe they can make you do what they want whether legal or not. I was amused by the fanfare for this idiots inauguration, but also remember the "feel-good" atmosphere when the other moron "Street" came into office, what a disaster that turned out to be and I don't see much different from this one, seeing how about a week ago this guy didn't want the media included on budget negotiations, apparently this "smack" has a problem with the "Sunshine Law" also. Him and his cronies need to wise up and realize the city of filthydelphia does not speak for the entire state!!!! Same goes for the inept council and Dwight Evans!!!!

This hearing doesn't even warrant the time squandered in court on such obviously unconstitutional 'laws'. What part of preemption doesn't Nutty understand? The only hearing that should be going on is whether Shelly Smith should be disbarred for her apparent inability to understand settled, unequivocal law. The honest way to go about this would be to repeal the preemption law. Oh wait...they tried that, and FAILED MISERABLY..

enforce the laws we have. Get the fat cat pols off their fat butts and do a job that the citizenry can be proud of instead of padding their pockets. The whole system stinks.

Who does Mr. Nutter think he is to dictate how many of anything a citizen should be "allowed" to buy? Whether it be guns, beans or cans of tomato soup, it simply is none of his business. What part of "Free Country" does he not understand? I just bought a pair of shoes this morning. I have plenty of shoes, but I simply liked these and bought them. I would strongly resent having anyone in the government come and tell me I don't need another pair of shoes.

Nutter and Ramsey are part of the problem, not the solution. Rendell is no help ,either.Losers, who finger point, because they're not capable of anything else.

Nutter, stop focusing on the NRA. It has nothing to do with this problem. The problem with guns in Philly is a problem with black urban culture. White areas of the city have no real problems with murders and guns. So let's get real here. Let's talk about out of wedlock pregnancy, fatherless homes, the "stop snitchin" culture, lack of quality schools, etc. Talking about the NRA is a cheap political distraction.

Maybe Nutter can try passing a ban on people's right to self defense. I mean, who needs guns? Don't we all have armed security details, and city police officers to escort us to and from our homes and work? I mean, seriously, who really needs one of those "things" anyway. Even crazier, why would I want to have more than one? I mean, what if you need a gun to adequately defend your house, without accepting a compromise "carry" weapon of a smaller size/power/caliber. Seriously, why are there so many different kinds of guns? I mean, do we need special "marine" models resist corrsion for use on boats, or perhaps we may want a 22 so that we can train for something a lot less expensive than 50cents a shot. I mean, not like you could ever need more than one gun. Especially since we all can count on our personal body protectors to keep those gun toting criminals at bay.

Doesn't take much to make the NRA crazies come out of their hideouts in the woods of Alabama (oh, excuse me, is that central PA where they live?). Why is it that a mere 3 million people (the size of the NRA membership) can have such influence in a country with a population 100 times that size? It's because the "Silent Majority" is willing to put up with that crap. It's people with guns who kill people! Check out the statistics. How many killings happen with guns vs. without guns. Even the dopes in the NRA can understand that idea. It's time to stop listening to the big-mouth, big-money minority and get in our representative's faces to get reasonable gun purchase laws on the books.

Gun control is nothing except citizen control and the sad part is that today's generation lack the mental foresight to see it.They are being led down a path that leads to total socialism and the lost of freedoms that we have enjoyed since this country was founded. Any political leader that doesn't understand this or does understand and works to social engineer society down this path needs to voted out of office.

Philly has a serious problem with gun-related violence, and we finally have a mayor who tries to do something about it. But then people from the rest of the state start whining that we're taking away their freedom (huge overreaction). Yes, the laws are clearly unconstitutional (not because of what they say but because the city, not the state passed them). And they will be struck down. I don't know if the laws would do anything to help the problem. But I'd like to hear one pro-gun person give me an intelligent solution that doesn't involve referring to the people of Philadelphia as "morons" and "animals" and proffering some ridiculous slippery slope argument about how these laws will lead to Stalinism. I haven't heard such a solution yet, because central PA doesn't care how many people die in Philadelphia as long as their "right" to unrestricted gun purchasing is preserved.
