Mayor Nutter today endorsed incumbent City Controller Alan Butkovitz, who faces two challengers in the upcoming Democratic primary election.

"He's done a good job," Nutter said of Butkovitz who has served one four-year term. "I certainly wish him the best in the rest of this campaign season. I certainly look forward to supporting him and voting for him on Election Day."

Butkovitz faces two opponents in the primary election – former Common Pleas Judge John Braxton and Brett Mandel, who served as an analyst under former controller Jonathan Saidel.

This is Nutter's first local endorsement since he took office. Last year, he actively supported Hillary Clinton's campaign for president during the primary season, before campaigning with President Obama during the general election. Nutter did not rule out making further endorsements during the primary season.

Nutter endorsed Butkovitz for a controller, and calls himself a controller? Points earned for momentum to abolish the BRT and put it under civil service regs: 100. Points earned for endorsing Butkovitz for controller: MINUS 100,000. The man spent his time avoiding one in 12 audits he had to do require by law! He spent a year campaigning on the tax dollar against investing in Darfur, a problem no one ever knew infested the city. He must have thought Darfur was a neighborhood in Philly, just NW of Mantua. He's not done anything remotely like a "good job." This goes to show you that Nutter is trying to seem like he's for reform, but he's actually just sabotaging it behind the scenes. Here's your proof. But-kiss-ovitz fined Wilson Goode Jr. just $800 for all the abuses entailed in the still-hugely-embarrassing Latrice Bryant scandal. Nutter has finally gone nuts by trying to cover for these clowns. SHAME!

Nutter calls himself a REFORMER???? You can't support Butkovitz for controller and do that. He's lost all credibility. Now they BOTH have.

"He's done a good job" covering up for the party and doing damage control. Otherwise, he's done nothing LIKE a good job. The job description of city controller is VERY simple -- audit all of the city departments every year. Butkovitz has done NOTHING of the sort. The office uses out of date methods, has little updated capacity using online reporting or other simple techniques used by corporations and even tiny little towns. The reason the city is still such a mess is because the papers have to do the job of city controller. There's a special place in hell for hacks.

I guess I am the fool. I voted for Nutter on his commitment on "a new day, a new way".

Its amazing that in the midst of the whole controversy over corruption and patronage in jobs that the BRT parks under the school district budget, Nutter goes out of his way to endorse a Controller who does the exact same thing. He hires political staff under the School District budget, for exactly the same reason - to evade the civil service rules. Butkovitz's campaign manager Marty O'Rourke and campaign treasurer Linda Miller both side line as very expensive "consultants" for the patronage heavy Parking Authority. No wonder he won't audit the PPA.

So Nutter has made 3 endorsements so far in his term as Mayor: Bob Brady for Congress, Hillary Clinton for President and Alan Butkovitz for Controller.

Nutter has made many decisions that caused me to scratch my head since he took office. His (very large) staff has operated behind closed doors and we haven't seen the "open and transparent" government that we were once promised. I gave Nutter the benefit of the doubt on this and other decisions that in many ways mirrored the brash attitude of the Street administration. I'm afraid this endorsement is the straw that broke the camel's back. There were many excellent city candidates Nutter could have endorsed in the past 2 years, yet he stayed silent and allowed the machine to swallow up our best and brightest challengers. And today he breaks his silence for Alan Butkovitz??? Good-bye Nutter, and good luck Philadelphia. It was fun pretending that the 2007 election made a difference.

It seems like a lot of people are drinking the 'bulldog koolaid' without realizing that ala the jonestown koolaid, it contains cyanide! Clean-up philly screams about departments not being audited every year. A majority of time, those departmental audits turn up with $0 in financial impact, and yet it requires the assignment of auditors, that could be focused on something with much greater benefit to the city. Would you rather have a controller who is short-sighted and completes all departmental audits annually to uncover 100K in savings or one that utilizes the resources of the office effectively to uncover over $413 million in savings. Wake up Philly!!! Alan Butkovitz has a long record of accomplishments on the behalf of the city, and despite the concerted attacks of his opponents that say otherwise, he is the BEST choice for City Controller! Read up on his record at http://alanbutkovitz.com
