Nutter talks about Colorado shooting and gun violence

POSTED: Friday, July 20, 2012, 5:52 PM

Here's a statement and video below in which Mayor Nutter discusses the tragic shooting inside of a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. that left 12 people dead and 59 injured.

“My most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims of this terrible act of violence.  My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Aurora, and all of Colorado, as they attempt to understand and cope with this horrific act.  The loss of twelve innocent lives and the pain that the other victims will carry is both devastating and unacceptable.

“While the attention of the American people is focused on Aurora and the irrational acts of an armed assailant, I am appalled by the pervasive problem of gun violence in our malls and parks and on the streets of our cities and towns.  This truly sad moment should be an occasion to strengthen gun safety laws, to call for national reform and to better ensure the safety of the public.”

Sadly, I don't see anything being done about it. It just continues to happen.

Nutter should look in his own back yard, and not use "legal gun purchases" as a scapegoat for the killing fields of this city. The man has no clue...a Bloomberg wannabe.

Here it comes...I can see assault weapons. Assault rifles. Theres no reason at all that a civilian would need this unless they're guarding a drug stash house. But tougher restrictions on handguns would only hurt the intended victims of the vicious thugs that plague this inner city, and inner cities around the nation.

The ATF data (from 1984-2009) reveals some interesting trends:

Total firearms produced in 2009 topped 5.4 million, exceeding the previous high total in 1994.
Over 3,000,000 long guns were produced in 2009, the highest quantity in the past 25 years. The total number of firearms sold in 2009 works out to one gun for every 57 citizens, based on the 2009 U.S. population of 305,529,237. After a decade-long decline, handgun production rose dramatically from 2004-2009. If trends continue, in a few more years, pistol sales could out-number long gun sales.

I'm not trying to stir the pot as I am NOT FOR OR AGAINST gun control, but last night's events made me curious as to how many guns are actually being produced and sold in the USA. If pushed, I'd have to answer "Guns don't kill people, people w guns kill people". It seems to me that if someone wants something bad enough, and they have the means to buy it, eventually, they will get what they want. It's a lose/lose situation.

I'm sure that Nutter is relieved that this was not in Philly.

The kinds of weapons used to wipe out lots of people in this kind of an attack is not needed by any civilian. Not for protection for oneself or the home, not for hunting. You just don't need it. Bring the ban back.

num nut nutter is at it again. Philly is killing its citizens one a day and this idiot is now talking about strengthening gun control when he can't stop the violence in the city. Why doesn't he quit?? Such a poor excuse for a mayor. Maybe street will come back after he is indited by the feds.

unlimited rights to guns? assault rifles and magazine clips that allow 40-100 rounds are just not needed for hunting. why do citizens need them?

The 2nd Ammendment and the right to arms has nothing to do with hunting.

@ the lopez, Why do citizens need weapons? Because an unarmed population is made up of subjects, not citizens. If one person in that movie house had disobeyed the policy of "no guns in the premises" and shot back, many lives would have been saved.

Nutter is becoming Barack Obama and chiming in on every incident that doesn't happen in Philly all to puruse a political agenda. Nutter really wants that job in a second Obama Administration.
