Mayor Nutter: Fans Should Feel Safe At Phillies Games

POSTED: Monday, July 27, 2009, 1:30 PM

Mayor Nutter today said the city "reaffirmed its commitment" to providing an orderly environment at the team's professional sports venues after one man was beaten to death Saturday evening in a parking lot outside of a Philadelphia Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park.  Two men have been charged in the death of a 22-year-old fan after a brawl spilled outside a stadium bar into the parking lot.

"This is, as far as I’m concerned, crazy, stupid, ignorant behavior that is in no way shape or form representative of Philadelphians or the people of the region," Nutter said. "It’s not a reflection on the Philadelphia Phillies. And unfortunately it’s almost impossible to account for every stupid, ignorant or asinine thing that somebody might do."

Still, Nutter said, fans should "feel more than comfortable and excited" that they can enjoy baseball, football, hockey or basketball games here without a fear of violence. "You put 45,000-plus people in one place and unfortunately one or two can make it very bad for everyone else," Nutter added.

Of course innocent until proven guilty, but looking at the ages of the men that the police disclosed today, you wonder what do they stand to gain from beating a young person of 22? Grown men should be a voice of reason in these situations.

The Phillies and the city need to crack down on the tailgating lot. Its a disgrace and out of control. Too much boozing and nonsense leads to too many drunks coming into the game and getting more drunk. Also, why do Phillies gate attendants allow entrance to fans who are noticeably intoxicated?

Two fans have been killed in CA within the past 5 years, due to incidents inside the stadium. So Philly is hardly alone in this problem.

It's still not clear where the altercation started. One story said in the stadium - if that's true, why weren't the police called then? And then in the bar, why not call the police to make sure the guys leave and go their separate ways? And besides that, it seems that there are always police officers outside the stadiums walking around... where were they that night? I agree with Lonestar too- if they are chartering a bus from a Fishtown bar, it's pretty obvious they intentionally got too drunk to drive. Apparently too drunk to think. And GROWN MEN! beating up on young guys. How macho.

ah yes, the 4 o'clock weekend game - nothing like all day in tailgating, knockin back a half a case before cheering on the home team and kickin someone to death - these guys must be very proud. 10 to 20 sounds about right. Probably coincidence that their sentence will equal the number of beers they had.

I enjoy having a few beers at the game. I think the concession people need to adhere to not serving intoxicated people. I was at a game Friday July 10 with my son (9 yrs. old), it was near the end of the game and a guy came stumbling from the scoreboard porch section carrying two draft beers and proceeded to puke on the stairs leading to the concourse level. My kid thought there was something wrong with him. (there was, he was drunk I explained) Maybe they need to station cops at the beverage stations to deter intoxicated people from getting more. My 9 year old could tell this guy didn't need any more beer.

maybe, if the cops aren't just sitting in their cars eating doughnuts or hanging around talking about how they set-up a couple of perps the other night, they could provide some security.
