Joe Paterno's memory is now stained by scandal. People are talking of having his statue removed from its place of honor and thrown away in shame. Was he a willing conspirator? We'll never know, and his absence makes it unjust to put him on trial. But, by deifying him (and for that, most of us have a measure of blame), we forced him to try to cover up the one stain that he must have suspected of being able to ruin his reputation. To a man in his latter years, a reputation is more valuable than anything else. Thus, he became a prisoner of his public image.
