Council committee approves renaming the Dell Music Center

Updated: To include correction on the proposed new name for "The Dell."

The “Robin Hood Dell” may soon have a new name.

City Council’s Committee on Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs approved a bill sponsored by Councilman Curtis Jones Jr. that would rename the open air-amphitheater to the “Georgie Woods Entertainment Center,” after the late civil-rights activist and radio personality.

“The Dell,” is the fourth largest performance venue in the city located in Fairmount Park.

While most agreed in renaming the center, Susan Slawson, the deputy commissioner of Recreation and Programs said that Council should proceed with caution.

“We wish to retain the Dell’s successful marketing and community familiarity,” Slawson said. “It is difficult to quantify the cost or the value of the Dell brand which would be lost should the name of the facility be changed at this time.”

An agreement was reached to amend the bill so that renaming the Dell would depend on a fundraising campaign to raise money to install a roof for the outside seating area which is estimated to be $10 million. The bill would take effect in 2015 and the land where the concert center sits will keep the name "Robin Hood Dell" and the performance venue would be the "Georgie Woods Entertainment Center."
