City Officials Say They have Made Final Offer to Mummers

POSTED: Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 3:21 PM
Negotiations between the Mummers and the city over how budget cuts will effect the New Year's Day parade wrapped up this afternoon. And the city says they have made their final offer.

"Certainly we want to have the Mummers Parade," Mayor Nutter said. "We have put forward what we think is a reasonable offer. The choice is up to the Mummers."

Due to budget constraints, the city has reduced the amount they are prepared to pay for the festive strut up Broad Street -- prompting criticism from the Mummers. Mayoral spokesman Doug Oliver said the city has not budged on their offer to cover $300,000 in service expenses.

"It is our best and final offer," said Oliver. He added that the city estimates that a shortened parade -- reduced to 6 1/2 hours instead of the traditional eight or nine -- would cost $347,000. Oliver said the city is waiting to hear if the Mummers will accept their terms.

Nutter cut $355,000 in parade prize money when he revised the city budget to shore up a $1 billion shortfall over the next five years. He originally said the Mummers would have to cover police and sanitation costs, but later restored the $300,000 for services.

that 300,000?? what and where is the itemized list down to the penny on where its going, the police and fire are asking for the same lists but is it that hard to get a list or is the city hiding something from the mummers as well as the police and fire...thats something you have to ask the city...its not a question of not accepting the 300k budge but it is being done shady and corectly..we are not trying the squeeze xtra money out of the city for this parade but it would have be better if we had more time to raise the extra money needed to produce the 110 year tradition that this city loves

if the mummers were not so selfish and took a year off, a lot of libraries could stay open. If it is so awesome, why can they not raise the money themselves? How much time did they spend washing cars, holding fund raising events, etc. to get the money without it being a free hand out?

the mummers would have been able to raise the money this year if they were given enough time but they were given less than 2 1/2 weeks to do this..its not that easy..plus if you did some reseach the parade generates 9 million dollars into the giving the city almost 8 million dollars profit(that money could help non profit organiztions like the libraries and pools stay open)

We're in a recession and the Mummers are belly-aching just because they have to cut a few hours off of the parade? Keeping libraries open is much more important than having the Mummers Parade. I know it's a Philly tradition, but these are hard times.

@ extra velvet They had about 3 weeks. What Nutter and his staff have done is terrible. Why didn't they tell the Mummers 3 or 6 months ago? Total ignorance. Where are the invoices? Something is not right about thsi whole situation. The Mummers also bring profit to the city, but I guess that doen't matter either.

it is the expectation of free money that is disgusting. as JDH419 said, "the mummers would have been able to raise the money this year if they were given enough time but they were given less than 2 1/2 weeks to do this"... why not be self sufficient and raise the money to ensure its success?

I thought the Mummers attracted many visitors to the City that spent millions of dollars between hotels, restaurants and partying? if that is the case, why aren't all the hotel and restaurant owners taking the side of the Mummers and barking at Mayor Nutter?

people are griping that there's been no notice- OF COURSE NOT. Few saw the economic collapse of September coming, and with such force. As for the parade - - as much as I hear both sides, I think it's time to retool the parade and bring it back to its roots. Toss the judge stands at Washington (and have them start deep on South Broad - march up to Washington - then cut down Washington to 2nd (where the Mummers Museum is located), turning on Two Street for the ‘real’ parade afterwards.

Imagine life without the Mummers Parade, or as I call it, the World's largest synchronized vomiting tournament set to the worst soundtrack imaginable.

Please post the "research" into how the Mummers parade generates the city 9 million. I would LOVE to see that load of BS. A link would be lovely.
