Budget fight alive and well on Twitter

POSTED: Thursday, June 21, 2012, 11:59 AM

We at PhillyClout have covered more than a few budget debates in our time. But this is the first year that Twitter has really been in full force as part of the debate. And it makes for some interesting commentary online.

For example today, the mayor’s press secretary Mark McDonald (@PhillyPressSec) tweeted the following: ”Will Council step up for the school students of Philadelphia? Confronting unprecedented school fiscal crisis, what will Council do?

Not long after that, Council President Darrell Clarke’s spokeswoman Jane Roh (@Jane_Roh) tweeted this: “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Property Assessments #phillybudget”

For those not following the debate, McDonald is implying that Council should provide more funding for schools than their current proposal offers. And Roh is suggesting that the Nutter administration has not provided enough budget data to Council.

Think these two will come to Twitter blows later? We’ll keep following Twitter.

Since people keep banging the "just collect the back taxes" drum, I wonder if people think that there is some desire NOT to collect these taxes on the part of the City. While some of that figure may be collectible, most of that can never be recovered, because the people who owe it are long dead, or because there is no legal recourse other than a sheriff sale, which will take years, and end up with yet another boarded up house that belongs to the City. A handful of Enron stock is more valuable than 99% of that $515 million. But I agree that the City should collect whatever it can.

In the fifth year of Nutter's term there is an "unprecedented" school fiscal crisis. On top of the crisis last year that required a tax increase and supposedly the cancellation of full-day kindergarten. It just snuck up on them. So naturally Mark McDonald's question is what will Council do about it instead of why did Nutter allow it to happen.

I think Crouching Tiger wins the day. Good movie.
