Babette Josephs concedes 182nd race to Brian Sims

POSTED: Friday, April 27, 2012, 12:49 PM

State Rep. Babette Josephs, who has represented Center City's 182nd District since 1985, just conceded Tuesday's Democratic primary election to her challenger, attorney Brian Sims.  Here is the statement her campaign spokesman just put out:

“My congratulations go out to the Democratic Nominee Brian Sims and all of his supporters Throughout many difficult, but successful races in my long service, I have consistently said that the voters are always right. I cannot change my tune now. I am truly grateful to the voters for allowing me to serve them for so long and for the opportunity to work with so many dedicated, talented, patient and professional colleagues, staff members and volunteers.

“I have always been about policy first, so I look forward to working with Brian Sims to represent the very special constituents of the 182nd. I will find other ways to contribute to my neighborhood, city, state, and nation.”

Sims, an attorney active in gay and lesbian issues, held a 226-vote lead from Tuesday's voting.  The City Commission started its official count this morning, which included 139 absentee ballots and five alternative ballots in the 182nd District.

Sims, who served as campaign treasurer for Josephs in 2010, has no Republican opponent in the Nov. 6 general election.

Since they have no opponents in the election, it is only fair that they take turns. She had years to steal from us; time to move over and let the next man/woman/whatever get fat off of the public's money.

Babette has always been very responsive to all her constituents and I hope Brian Sims will be too.

Since 1985?! It's about time she got ousted! There is no way anyone should be able to suck off the government that long. Good riddance!

I would normally agree with most of the post here except that she has been in office since 1985 for a reason. She did her job. No scandals and not impropriety. She did well for her constituents. Mr. Sims has to uphold her track record. Let's see if he can do it.

Not sure how reality based you are but she's been in office because the Dem machine supported her and there's no opposition. Not for a record of accomplishment.
As for scandals... I would say her lack of responsiveness and representation is pretty scandalous.

That from someone who thinks nothing about posting multiple comments - often successively - consisting of five and often more paragraphs.

"People supported photo ID by 80% even in Philly in her district."
You rail and wail incessantly about the presence - ubiquitous presence - and influence of Liberal Democrats in Philadelphia. And practically all of the 182nd District qualifies for that honor - to the extent that the Democratic candidate will run unopposed in November.
Yet you have the "very tone deaf" nerve to assert that 80% of the voters in the 182nd District support the unabashedly Republican scam of requiring photo ID to vote.
And like all the other Republican schemers you defend this restrictive measure by equating The Right to Vote with driving, using a credit card, purchasing liquor and all kinds of other Commercial, non-patriotic practices.

True, but you don't need I.D. to fire the rifle. So when it comes to your example - rifles - "buying" and "firing" are two different matters.
So, in the same vein I.D. is required to register to vote (and no one's complaining about that).
But "registering" and "voting" are two different processes.

Her concession statement was very gracious. Which is rare nowadays.

It is a lot easier to give a gracious concession speech when you are leaving with a very fat pension and 27 years of pocketed loot. Besides, the office is just being handled over to another Party functionary. Not much of a change, just a new snout sucking on our teats.

All you need to do is look at Josephs to understand the dysfunction and bankruptcy of Philly
