Mayor Makes Stanley Cup Bet

MAYOR NUTTER, MAYOR DALEY BET ON STANLEY CUP

Philadelphia, May 27, 2009 – Today, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Mayor Richard M. Daley announced that they would bet on the outcome of the Stanley Cup between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Should the Flyers win or lose, Mayor Nutter will volunteer in a community garden with the Mayor's Office of Sustainability. As part of the City's Greenworks plan, the Mayor's Office of Sustainability aims to bring fresh, local, and healthy food to within 10 minutes of 75 percent of residents. Encouraging community gardens - along with bringing farmers markets to underserved neighborhoods and increasing the amount of fresh foods sold in local stores - is key to accomplishing this goal. If the Flyers win, Mayor Nutter will donate the food grown to Philabundance, the region’s largest hunger relief organization whose mission is to end hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley by acquiring food and distributing it through organizations serving people in need. If the Black Hawks win, Mayor Nutter will donate the food grown to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

"While the Flyers fans and Black Hawks fans may not agree on much these days, everyone knows that eating good, fresh foods is key to staying healthy," said Mayor Nutter. "I look forward not only to watching the Flyers win the Stanley Cup but to volunteering in a community garden and donating the produce to Philabundance."

Chicago’s wager wagered a large assortment of local Chicago food, drink and other products. If the Flyers win, the City of Philadelphia will donate the goods, as appropriate, to charities.

“Both teams come from great American cities, with passionate fans and terrific food,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. “This should be a great Stanley Cup Finals, and I am happy to place this wager on the success of the Chicago Blackhawks.”

Items Included in Chicago’s Bet:

Abundance Bakery: three dozen red velvet cupcakes.
Al’s #1 Italian Beef: 100 Italian Beef Sandwiches.
Allen Brothers: six boxes of 34 oz. USDA Prime Long Bone Ribeye steaks (The Blackhawk Chop) for Philadelphia and 5,000 burgers to Blackhawks Charities.
Azteca Foods Inc.: 10 cases each tortillas, tortilla chips, salad shells
Billy Goat Tavern: Three dozen double “cheezborgers.”
BJ's Market: Barbecue Turkey Ribs, Mustard-Fried Catfish, Roasted Turkey Wings.
Bobak’s Sausage Company: 100 Italian Sausages and 100 Gourmet Chicken Burger “Pucks.”
C. J. Vitner Company: 10 cases of Chicago Style Potato Chips.
Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs: “Cowboy” by David Todd Trost.
Chicago Public Library: A collection of books by some of Chicago's great authors, including Scott Turow, Innocent; Carl Smith, The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City; Gwendolyn Brooks, A Book of Poems; Saul Bellows, The Adventures of Augie March; Studs Terkel, Touch and Go; Sarah Paretsky, Body Work.
Connie's Pizza: 50 Large Deep Dish Sausage Pizzas.

not saying the flyers will lose, but can the Mayor actually pay off the bet when he whines about the budget and cuts...oh yeah he will just raise taxes to cover.
