Mayor Nutter today said the city has told the Phillies that if the team manages to win the World Series, the city will not help pay for a parade.

"We have communicated that should there be an event of that type, money will have to be raised or costs paid external to the city," Nutter said.

Previously, Nutter had hedged on the parade issue. Last year, the city paid just over $1 million in police overtime, street cleaning and medical service for the victory romp down Broad Street, according to the mayor's press office. The cost was lessened by $300,000 contributed by about 22 organizations.

But after the 2008 parade, the city implemented a policy requiring those who stage parades and festivals to pay the city for its security and clean-up expenses. That policy was implemented last year when the city had to cut more than $1 billion from its five-year financial plan.

So why was there a Puerto Rican parade this year?

Rizdiggah - there was a Puerto Rican Day parade because the event planners paid for it themselves. Did you read the article above? Apparently not.

Finally, some fiscal sanity! The Phillies rake in millions. Let them pay.

Why couldn't this announcement wait until the final out? If it was not meant to be, then keep it to yourself. We'll worry about it when we cross that bridge. This is a "good problem."

UncleEddie: Good idea. IF the Phils win (and let's not get ahead of ourselves on that!) why not charge admission to the CBP/Linc portions of the celebrations? Figure 100K fans in those seats at even $15 per ticket, you've just offset the cost of your parade.

This is like worrying about your taxes if you win the lottery. It is a problem worth having.

Thank you Mayor Nutter for being fiscally responsible here (and consistent in regards to other parades). That said, thanks also for jinxing them.

Finally some sense. Shut down libraries, cut city services, and ten pay for a parade? There was a move afoot to get an injunction anyway, had the city tried to pay for it, that would havestopped a parade altogether. its just another excuse for the low rent ignorant people who live here to act like fools.
