Water main break in Center City an example of city's infrastructure needs?

POSTED: Monday, July 23, 2012, 8:50 AM

Just last week Mayor Nutter stood up with leaders of cities from around the country and called on the federal government to provide more infrastructure funding to cities. Nutter said the city needed money to shore up bridges and roads -- as well as to invest in new projects.

Last night a massive water main break in Southwest Center City provided a real life example of why the city needs that kind of funding. At least 100 people were evacuated, homes were flooded and water service was cut off for a large number of residents. (For more details, here's a story from the Inquirer).

I blanch every time I see another useless layer of asphalt laid down over a rapidly decaying water infrastructure. Unless rehabilitation and replacement of existing sewers and water mains is done now, this city can't expect new business and homeowners. No one will move into a crumbling ruin. Infrastructure is the one "must have" for a city and ought to be the first priority for spending.
