UPDATE: The Democratic Governors Association has started a petition to "Stop Zuck's Fundraiser," but many of the comments on the DGA Facebook page are actually PRO-Christie, so...
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will host what is believed to be the first political fundraiser ever at his home, and he'll be doing it for Gov. Christie.
First reported by the Wall Street Journal (and concurrently by Buzz Feed), this is significant because:
1) 28-year-old Internet tycoons from Silicon Valley aren't expected to raise money, let alone support, 50-year-old Republican governors from the other side of the country.
2) Christie's fundraising appeal is so broad it goes beyond the typical New Jersey constituencies who would be expected to get involved in a gubernatorial race. We reported yesterday that Cowboys great Roger Staubach is giving the gov cash, for example.
3) Christie's push for "education reform" has crossover, post-partisan appeal. In a statement, Zuckerberg cited education as what he admires about Christie. Zuckerberg, Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker appeared on Oprah Winfrey's show in 2010 so Zuckerberg could give a $100 million challenge grant to the Newark school system, and ever since Christie and Zuckerberg have remained in touch. They often text; no evidence they write on each other's walls, though.
many people touting education form have their heart in the right place, but they are being doubletalked by corporations that just want to privatize and control our education system. we need more funding for education and new innovative policies within our public system of schooling. charter and privatization are not the answer. and public money for private schools is absolutely disgusting. take a look at the dreck they are teaching kids in louisiana schools for example. privatization of schools will be the end of the American dream.
