Naked, 300-lb. man charged

Police responded yesterday about 5:30 p.m. to the Wal-Mart in Exton, where shoppers reported an unadvertised -- and unappreciated -- special: a naked man on display.

West Whiteland Township police located the 32-year-old suspect, Verdon L. Taylor, inside the store, wearing only a pair of allegedly stolen socks. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Downingtown resident refused to comply with verbal commands and required a Taser to be taken into custody, police said. Taylor then began spitting at the officers, hitting one officer in the face.

Police said surveillance video from Wal-Mart showed Taylor exiting a vehicle in the parking lot and removing all of his clothes. He entered the store naked and approached the customer-service counter where he purloined a pair of socks, placed them on his feet, and walked further into the store. The video showed shoppers avoiding Taylor as he sauntered through the store, police said.

Taylor, who has a lengthy history of summary convictions for offenses  such as disorderly conduct, was arraigned on charges of indecent exposure, aggravated assault, retail theft and related offenses. Police said he was remanded to Chester County Prison after failing to post $50,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 21.
