It was bad enough that a Wilmington woman left two children unattended in her vehicle while she went inside a drinking establishment, police said, but then she allegedly assaulted an employee when questioned about the kids.

New Garden Township Police said they took Barbara C. Lane, 42, of Wilmington, into custody as she attempted to leave the bar in the 8900 block of Gap-Newport Pike on Jan. 20. She was charged with simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, driving with a suspended license and related offenses. According to court records, a preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Police want to remind residents that a spate of burglaries is continuing in the township. Typically, once the thieves determine that the home is unoccupied, they force entry, often by kicking in a door or breaking glass. Residents should be on alert for suspicious vehicles and contact police immediately.
