Coatesville to see the lights and more

Holiday cheer will descend on Coatesville this weekend with a tree-lighting, a walk-run, a celebrated parade and a visit from Santa.

Holiday cheer will begin its public display in Coatesville on Friday for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m.; participants are encouraged to donate an ornament for the tree.

The family-oriented weekend will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Brandywine Health Foundation's 2nd Annual Festive 5K Run/Walk presented by A.P. Lubrano & Company, Inc; proceeds will benefit the Coatsville Youth Initiative. The 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk, which starts at Scott Middle School, will be held rain or shine. Boasting, a fast, flat course along Lincoln Highway, it will feature cash prizes and age-group awards.

Weather permitting, the race willl be followed by the annual Coatesville Christmas Parade, billed as Chester County's largest. It will feature the Lukens Band - celebrating its 100th anniversary this year - sports team mascots, Mummers, school and community groups and bands, antique, classic and modified autos, and police and fire apparatus. Over 100 entries are expected to march the 1.5 mile parade route, kicking off the holiday season and escorting Santa into town.
