6-foot, bronze griffin to grace campus

A bronze sculpture of a griffin, the mascot for the School at Church Farm, will be dedicated during a ceremony on Friday at 1 p.m. on the Exton campus.

The six-foot-tall, 600-pound statue is a gift from Sam Ballam of Bryn Mawr, a longtime trustee and former board chairman at Church Farm, an Episcopal boarding and day school for 180 boys in grades seven through 12. The sculpture was created by David Turner, a Virginia artist whose commissions have included the White House.

School officials said each year a CFS student wears an oversized costume to portray the mythical mascot - a blend of eagle and lion -  at school events, such as sports games. "The qualities of the griffin have appealed to the imagination of our CFS community, which has embraced "Griffie" as our mascot for more than a generation," said the Rev. Edmund K. Sherrill II, the head of school.
