Nutter: NRA ad "reprehensible, disgusting"

POSTED: Wednesday, January 16, 2013, 3:43 PM

WASHINGTON – Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called the NRA’s ad featuring President Obama’s daughters "reprehensible, disgusting and outside the bounds of human dignity," today.

"The NRA has reached a new low in public discourse," Nutter said at a Washington hearing in which he endorsed Obama’s calls for new gun laws.

Nutter was referring to an NRA ad that called Obama an "elitist hypocrite" for allowing the Secret Service to protect his daughters at school but for expressing skepticism at the gun-rights group’s call for putting armed guards in every school.

"Are the president's kids more important than yours," a narrator asks in the ad.

UPDATE: U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan, a South Jersey Republican, also criticized the NRA ad in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

"What this discussion does not need is what we saw today from the NRA," said Runyan, who has received electoral support from the NRA in the past. "Their ad referencing President Obama’s children was at the very least inappropriate and diverts the discussion away from the important issues."

Nutter, a longtime advocate of tougher gun laws, was at the White House for Obama’s speech today unveiling his new plan, and then spoke to sympathetic House Democrats who are also backing the president's plan.

Every year in America, he said, more than 100,000 people are shot and 11,583 are murdered. Every day, he added, 50 children and teens are shot and eight die, including five who are murdered.

"If this was disease killing that many people, if this were accidents killing that many people, if this were bags of tainted spinach killing that many people, this country would immediately take swift action to stop that kind of death toll," Nutter said. "Somehow some are seemingly paralyzed when it comes to guns and violence."

I don't ever remember voting the NRA into power. They don't represent me. They represent the billion dollar a year gun industry. They hide behind the 2nd amendment like they hide behind their guns.

"reprehensible" & "disgusting" are 2 GREAT words to describe the Obama administration. Toss in ""destructive", "divisive", "failure", "cowardly", "filthy" and "scummy" and we are getting off to a great start in describing the Obama tenure...

What is "reprehensible and disgusting" is this current president's utter contempt for the constitution and liberty.

Why people get so caught up in political parties or who the president is? In the past 20 years, no president (rep or dem) has made any difference in the way I live my life, financial or socially. Sure the rules changes, but if you are smart, you adadpt and keep going. As far as gun laws go, as a gun owner, I am all for tougher gun laws. If I have to give up my weapons to ensure no bad guys get them, I am all for it.

what's disgusting is Obama using kids as pawns for his political motivation. He had to make sure there was 1 white girl, 1 white boy, 1 black boy, and 1 hispanic girl surrounding him for his big executive order bill signing. what a joke the left is. do you people even think in your brain or just repeat what is force fed to you by Obama and the MSM?? Meanwhile when you are done complaining that the NRA mentioned the Obama children, go check out the new video game depicting the head of the NRA being shot and the Obama administration refusing to denounce it. or better yet the new liberal hollywood smash hit "Bullet to the Head" . great examples by the oh so hypocritical left!

"The libs can't refute the facts so they resort to personal attacks."

OR I could say the NRA and Rightwing can't refute the facts so they resort to personal attacks.

4 Presidents have been shot dead in our country's short history. The fact that the NRA would conveniently forget that our President, ANY American President, past, present and future, is any American enemy's number one target.

And frankly, Obama and his family need protection from Americans gun nuts like YOU.

It's amazing how the libs like to "forget" that there is the Second Amendment. Our president talks about how the "majority" of the American People want to restrict guns. Somehow this gives him the power to violate the Constitution (the one he repeatedly promised to "defend")with Executive Orders. OK, what if the next President decides to ignore or effectively repeal by Executive Order....oh I don't know,.... The Thirteenth Amendment. How would that go over? "Oh, but that's different....." No. It's not.

Sammy, The Founding Fathers, or the heads of the states actually, were afraid of a STANDING FEDERAL ARMY. They didn't want to pay for it and they didn't want that threat hanging over their heads. There was also some thought that a standing army had to have something to do and wars being the best way for them to spend their time.....

The 2nd Amendment had ZERO to do with hunting or with arming the people against a tyrannical government. It was about having a military to respond to external threats available without having to pay for it.

These facts are clearly shown in the writings of those who put together the Bill of Rights.

The NRA makes billions in gun sales. This isn't about the Constitution, it's about greed. Plain and simple. And you gun nuts are just as gullible as you think Obama supporters are.

@PhillyNovaFree- where do get your facts from the supermarket tabloids? Give the address of the NRA store that you are so sure exists. There is none. The NRA is nothing but a union of folks sharing a common interest. It's no different then being a member of the National Hot Rod Association, a group of folks that support racing cars. It's like the AARP, a group of folks that represent retired folks. You are right about the 2nd Amendment having zero to do with hunting. The 2nd Amendment is about an idividual's freedom to defend [arm] himself/herself. The NRA has never sold even 1 gun. They don't manufacture them either. Looks like you got plenty of execise today by "running" your mouth. It's too bad that you didn't have anything truthful to feer in your anti-gun rant. You will never see the last gun, since it hasn't been invented yet.

Nutter should worry a lot more about his own city which has been a ghetto mess since he took office. The murder rate, violent crime rates, uneployment and education could literally not be worse. It is a shame how bobo, and the rest of the wealthy limo liberals, use the nation's emotional reaction to a tragedy to sell their agenda. If they could not use FALSE GUILT, they would not even have anything to say - it is like if unions could not use violence...

It's not only reprehensible and disgusting, it's a stupid ad.

If you can't protect yourself with 10 rounds in the magazine, you have problems that nobody can solve.

This is just common sense. A nut can still do a lot of damage with 3 handguns that have 10 round clips, but this law will at least prevent the worst possible scenario.

Just imagine 4 terrorists in 4 hotel rooms each with 3 AR15 and 100 round drums on each. It would take all day to stop them, and a whole city would be forever changed. The shootings we have seen so far have been minor compared to how bad things can get.

Nutter knows all about being: "reprehensible, disgusting and outside the bounds of human dignity," just look at what he's doing to the City's Firefighters and their "binding arbitration" award. Mayor Nuttie has been equally reprehensible & disgusting with his treatment of the City's other 2 unions: DC33 & DC47. Nutter should not even be in Washington except to be begging for money to keep Philadelphia running. While he's palling around trying to advance his political ambitions, the City continues to: "head down the Highway to Hell".

Surely you joke. Anything that can be made should be legal. This is like the now 20 year old fake argument over "cop-killer" bullets. There never was a "cop-killer" bullet. That was a term coined by the media. Just like "assualt rifle". How can you place intent on an inanimate object? If a cop used those same bullets in a fire fight and they saved his life, would the media refer to them as "cop life saver bullets?" NO - because GOOD news doesn't sell media stories as much as sensationalistic headlines. Does anyone have the name of a cop who was shot with a "cop-killer" bullet. If you do, publish the name, city, weapon caliber and the ballistic report of the bullet. I can gaurantee you that there was never a box of bullets manufactured that had the words:"Cop-Killer" on the side of the box.[Not unless some cop loaded the rounds at home and took them to the range to impress his buds."

jokmaster - you are simple minded. The issue is that if you use legal restrictions to "solve" the problem, you give an advantage to criminals who do not follow these laws anyway and you create a black market (where the same criminals will profit selling them). It is nice to throw language around but what do you relaly think will result from a ban on these bullets or "assault weapons". Are you aware that drugs are illegal or gambling or prostitution - prohibition doesn't work at anything but getting pigs work - are you one?

The NRA made this ad to work up their "base", which seems to be kind of a waste of money since their base is always worked up about something, part of the reason they they feel they need 1000 guns apiece. The irony is these are exactly the kind of people who should never be allowed near a gun.

The good thing is that as more moderate people, including responsible gun owners, see what the NRA really is- nothing more than a shill for gun manufacturers- , they will be repulsed and their political influence will wane. Their positions are not faring too well in recent polling.

Good arguments from each side here. I agree, the president's children shouldn't be dragged into this, so let's focus on the physical evidence of armed protection. Our kids are subject to outside threats, not as likely and often as the president's, but IS just the same - or else this argument would not be on. The way they are protected is with armed security personnel, which is proven to work or else they would do it another way. Therefore to protect our children from any more tragedies like Sandy Hook, security would be an effective means. Simply take away all the politics and see what works in our corporate buildings, VIP locations etc. and apply the same to our schools. Why is this so hard? Clips, magazines, AR-15s have nothing to do with the moment.
