Federal government to cover NJ power, transit costs

The federal government will pay for 100 percent of emergency power and public transportation costs in the New Jersey counties worst hit by Sandy, Senators Bob Menendez and Frank Lautenberg said Thursday.

The government aid will cover those costs through Nov. 9 in the eight New Jersey counties covered by the federal disaster declaration. The government typically pays for 75 percent of such costs, but Menendez and Lautenberg, both Democrats, sought increased support.

"This additional federal aid will help relieve the burden on the state and local governments as they respond to the enormous damage," the Senators said in a joint news release.
