Temple signs deal with Coca-Cola

When students return to Temple University next month, they won’t just find a new president and new provost. Their beverage of choice is changing, too.

When students return to Temple University next month, they won't just find a new president and new provost. Their beverage of choice is changing, too.

The university announced Friday that it has struck a five-year deal with The Coca-Cola Company to become the new beverage provider for Temple, with the option to renew for another five years.

For the last 20 years, Temple has partnered with Pepsi, said university spokesman Brandon Lausch.

But university officials said an online student survey showed that 60 percent prefer coke.

Coca-Cola products will be available across Temple's campuses in the Philadelphia region, including its bookstores, dining facilities and the Liacouras Center, the university said. Look for Coca-Cola signage at the university's new athletic campus at the site of the former William Penn High School, as well as elswehere on campus.

"We are excited about Coca-Cola's portfolio of beverages that are suitable for any campus lifestyle, as well as the energy and engagement this agreement will bring to the Temple community," Michael D. Scales, Temple's associate vice president of business services, said in a statement. "This partnership also responds to feedback from the university community expressing interest in this change."

The university will receive a financial payment from Coca Cola, as it did from Pepsi, Lausch said. He declined to disclose the financial terms, but noted that the partnership includes: sponsorship opportunities; scholarship funding; support for capital recreation projects, such as Temple's new sports complex; and in-kind product donations.
