Snow couldn't spoil this spring break

When Northampton Community College canceled spring break this week to make up snow days, some students found a way to get their beach kicks anyway.

Students at Northampton Community College weren't happy when the school decided to cancel spring break this week to make up snow days.

But some of them came up with a way to laugh about.

On Tuesday, they donned beach attire, hauled out a kiddie wading pool and acted like the school's food court on the second floor of the college center was a little piece of Florida, despite the winter cold.

College President Mark Erickson showed up in sandals, shorts and an orange T-shirt (orange is the school's color) and added to the fun by asking the food services manager to hand out drink umbrellas in the cafeteria, said college spokeswoman Heidi Butler. Not to be outdone, the food service manager — Bob Meyer — set up a drink cart and served passion fruit punch and handed out leis.

Students tossed a football and frisbee on the Bethlehem campus. The president played ping pong, and a student, pleased that Erickson took part, bought him lunch, Butler said.

"The students' creativity and sense of humor helped everyone "chill out," Butler said. "Learning to turn frustration into fun is not a bad life lesson."
