Former Deputy Mayor Greenberger to join Drexel

Alan Greenberger, former deputy mayor under Mayor Michael Nutter, will join the teaching ranks at Drexel.

Alan Greenberger, former deputy mayor of Philadelphia, will join the teaching ranks at Drexel University beginning April 1, the school announced.

Greenberger will become a professor in the Department of Architecture & Interiors in the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and a visiting fellow in the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation.

"Alan Greenberger provided great leadership and partnership to businesses and non-profits pursuing an economic development agenda in Philadelphia over the past seven years, and our University greatly benefited from his counsel and expertise," Drexel University President John A. Fry said in announcing the appointment. "As Philadelphia continues one of the most exciting phases of innovation in its history, we're glad to have Alan join Drexel to help our students and faculty understand and contribute to it."

Greenberger, who helped develop a comprehensive plan for the city — called Philadelphia 2035 — and oversaw the rewriting of the city's zoning code, said in a statement he was delighted to join Drexel where he will teach elective courses drawing on his knowledge as a designer and urban planner.

He served as deputy mayor from 2009 through 2015 during Mayor Nutter's administration. He also served as executive director and then chairman for the Philadelphia City Planning Commission during that period.

Greenberger got his bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
