Community College of Philadelphia appoints interim president

The Community College of Philadelphia has appointed its vice president for academic affairs as interim president.

The Community College of Philadelphia's board of trustees on Wednesday appointed a senior administrator as interim president, effective Sept. 6.

Judith Gay, vice president for academic affairs, will step into the role as the college conducts a national search for its next leader. Gay replaces Stephen M. Curtis, who was terminated by the board without cause in June. Curtis had led the college since 1999.

"Dr. Gay is a recognized leader in higher education whose strong focus on student success and persistence has helped to increase the number of students earning workforce credentials and associate degrees," Matt Bergheiser, chair of the trustees board said in a prepared statement. "The College is a critical resource for the city, and its capacity to support students in graduating and transitioning to universities and to employment is the key to developing a dynamic, well-educated workforce."

Gay, 63, whose appointment was approved by the board at a special meeting, has more than three decades of experience in higher education, including serving as division chair at Montgomery County Community College, a professor and chair of the psychology department at Chestnut Hill College and an assistant professor at Gettysburg College. She has been vice president for academic affairs for 13 years.

She's a native of Philadelphia and a resident of Mount Airy.
